The Division of Infectious Diseases at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is seeking a new faculty member as Medical Director for Infection Prevention and Control and to support the infectious diseases consultation and care services and medical student teaching at University Hospital in Newark, NJ. The Medical Director for Infection Prevention and Control will assist with the development, implementation and oversight of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program in collaboration with hospital leadership and relevant stakeholders. The Medical Director is responsible for overall quality, safety, regulatory activities and performance excellence of the program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to improving and reducing hospital-acquired infection (HAI) rates; providing subject matter expertise in Infection Prevention and Control (IPD) and infectious disease epidemiology, including developing and implementing policies and procedures to mitigate infections and improve IPC performance; responding to outbreaks and pathogens of epidemiologic significance; monitoring and interpreting epidemiologic data; maintaining regulatory requirements related to IPC including reporting of data in compliance with National Health Safety Network (NHSN), CMS and other internal metrics; participating in multidisciplinary committees; educating and providing IPC recommendations to staff and hospital leadership.

Additionally, the faculty member will also consult on the management of a wide variety of infectious diseases working with a dedicated Infectious Diseases fellow. Direct patient care will also be provided to infectious diseases patients, including those living with HIV infection, in a state of the art multi-disciplinary infectious diseases ambulatory practice. The faculty member will mentor and teach medical students a part of the New Jersey Medical School Community Learning Group. Opportunities to join and eventually lead clinical research studies are also available at the onsite NIH funded Clinical Trials Unit that is funded to perform HIV and COVID-19 treatment and prevention studies.

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in partnership with University Hospital has the largest Infectious Diseases Fellowship program in the State of New Jersey. It is also the largest provider for HIV care and clinical research in the state. In addition to usual infectious diseases consults, the Division is a major provider of infectious diseases care to hepatology, liver transplant, orthopedic, and trauma patients. The Division is a leader in clinical and basic research in emerging infectious diseases including HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, other select agents, and is a major recipient of federal, foundation, and pharmaceutical grants.
