Posting Summary
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking Psychiatrists Per Diem for multiple vacancies Statewide, based from Trenton, NJ. The Psychiatrist will provide direct clinical care to state prisoners; functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams; and maintain effective communication with staff and administration.
Duties include:
- Provides assessments, direct clinical care and treatment planning to inmates.
- Conducts comprehensive psychiatrist assessments (review of the electronic record, psychotropic medications, history of mental illness, prior psychiatric hospitalization, suicidal, unusual, or bizarre behavior) for new admissions to UCHC's Special Needs roster according to established timeframes.
- Is knowledgeable about and follows DOC and UCHC policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, emergency and non-emergency forced medication, management of potentially suicidal inmates, psychiatry services, and therapeutic restraint.
- Orders, initiates and interprets laboratory tests according to required time frames or as medically necessary including metabolic monitoring, mood stabilizer blood levels, thyroid function, ABMS testing (AIMS), and other appropriate biochemical monitoring.
- Prescribes and renews medications that are deemed medically necessary within required time frames

Certifications/Licenses: Eligible for certification or certified by the American Board Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Psychiatry with valid NJ medical license, CDS and NJ DEA.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Valid Driver's License. Possesses own vehicle or have alternate means of transportation from one site to another.
- An ABPN-certified Psychiatrist will receive a salary premium over a non-ABPN-certified Psychiatrist. If the Psychiatrist attains ABPN certification during UCHC employment, the Psychiatrist's salary will be increased to reflect the premium. A Psychiatrist must maintain ABPN-certification in order to retain this premium. If ABPN certification lapses, the premium will be removed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Forensic psychiatry preferred.
