Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country, providing a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and supporting medical education, training and research.

The Trust comprises four hospitals: the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Horton General Hospital. All Paediatric neurosurgery services are delivered at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Paediatric Neurosurgery based at the Oxford Children's Hospital at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The post is available to cover by illness.

Responsibilities
  • Provide routine care for emergency and elective paediatric neurosurgical patients, covering the full spectrum of cranial and spinal pathologies.
  • Attend joint ward rounds each weekday morning and participate in a 1:4 on-call rota.
  • Collaborate with senior consultants in decision-making and operations.
  • Participate in teaching undergraduate clinical students, training junior doctors, multidisciplinary teaching and clinical examinations.
  • Lead and support research activity within the department; postgraduate research training (Masters or PhD) is expected.
  • Attend and contribute to audit, clinical governance, incident reporting, risk management, CPD and guideline development.
  • Maintain up-to-date professional knowledge, demonstrating this through appraisal and revalidation processes.
  • Support administrative duties under the direction of the lead clinician and maintain service delivery within Trust policies.
Person Specification
  • Full neurosurgical training (to FRCS or equivalent).
  • Sub-speciality fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery.
  • Registered on the GMC Specialist Register in neurosurgery at interview.
  • Full GMC licence to practice.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent; and be on the GMC Specialist Register at appointment.
  • Responsible for maintaining a private residence within reasonable proximity of John Radcliffe Hospital and ensuring immediate contact during on-call.
