The Everyday Essentials Promotions (EEP) team is building the intelligent promotion platform that powers hundreds of millions of dollars in annual promotions, helping millions of customers save money while enabling Amazon's selling partners to grow their businesses profitably.

What You'll Do

You will lead a full two-pizza engineering team that transforms how promotions work for everyday essentials at scale. Your team sits at a unique crossroads-building experiences for selling partners, internal stakeholders, platform teams across Amazon, and ultimately influencing how millions of customers discover, apply, and shop with promotions.

You'll be tackling genuinely hard problems: How do you build ML models that predict when customers need to reorder? How do you create promotion tools that prevent gaming and abuse while still delighting legitimate customers? How do you design systems that enable multiple promotion types to work together seamlessly without breaking the economics?

Your team will own the full stack-from distributed big-data pipelines and ML models that personalize promotions based on consumption patterns, to intelligent tools that help selling partners optimize their promotional strategies, to the customer-facing experiences that surface the right discount at exactly the right moment in their shopping journey.

The Impact You'll Have
  • Customer Experience: Your team's innovations directly shape how customers discover promotions across search, detail pages, cart, and checkout. You will build features that make saving money effortless and intuitive.
  • Selling Partner Success: You will create intelligent tools that help thousands of selling partners make smarter promotional decisions, optimize their budgets, and grow their businesses on Amazon.
  • Platform Innovation: You will build new incentive types, design novel incentive customer experiences, and develop optimization strategies for selling partners that drive the right win-win outcomes for Amazon, customers, and businesses. Your technical decisions will shape the future of how promotions work across the platform.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: You will partner with SPP, Promotions Platform, Everyday Essentials Sciences, SEAS, Selling Partner Services, and numerous other teams that impact the customer and seller journey on Amazon. Success here means influencing without authority and building consensus across diverse stakeholders.
What Makes This Role Unique

People-First Leadership: We look for someone who is laser-focused on the people they manage. You will be responsible for understanding each engineer's growth aspirations and creating opportunities that help them achieve their career goals, whether they want to deepen technical expertise, grow into architecture roles, or develop leadership skills. Your success will be measured not just by what your team ships, but by how your team members grow.

GenAI as a Force Multiplier: You will leverage GenAI in three key ways:

  • Supercharge your team's productivity: Use AI-powered tools to accelerate development, automate repetitive tasks, and help your engineers focus on high-impact work.
  • Enhance explainability and automation: Build systems that use GenAI to explain why certain promotional recommendations work, helping partners understand and trust your suggestions. Develop new models that automate promotion management, reducing manual work while improving outcomes.
  • Enable seamless integration: Connect your core features with leading GenAI surfaces across Amazon like Rufus and Amelia, making promotion discovery, engagement, and management a breeze for customers and selling partners alike.

Multi-Audience Impact: Few teams touch as many different users as yours will. In a single sprint, you might ship features for selling partners managing their promotional budgets, internal category teams optimizing campaigns, platform teams integrating with your APIs, and customers discovering deals across Amazon's shopping surfaces.

Technical Depth and Breadth: You will architect solutions for complex promotion combinability that requires coordination across multiple platform teams, dive into ML model performance for personalized targeting, and work with distributed systems, Real Time eligibility engines, recommendation models, and customer-facing UX-all for a category that is becoming the majority of Amazon's business.

Autonomy with Accountability: You will have significant freedom to chart your technical direction. You will make the build-vs-buy decisions, prioritize the roadmap, balance innovation with operational excellence, and own the outcomes.

Innovation that Ships: This is not a research project-it is a high-velocity delivery environment where your innovations go live to millions of customers and thousands of selling partners. You will balance incremental improvements with breakthrough features that redefine what's possible.

What You'll Bring

We are looking for someone who thrives in ambiguity and can turn complex business problems into elegant technical solutions. You should be energized by the challenge of building leverage through smart architecture, automation, and strategic partnerships.

  • You have strong technical judgment to navigate tradeoffs between speed and scalability, and you communicate tradeoffs to business leaders, selling partners, and technical teams who all care deeply about different aspects of success.
  • You are excited about using machine learning and AI to create better experiences-whether that's building models that optimize promotional configurations, creating recommendation systems that suggest the right promotions at the right time, or developing explainable AI that helps selling partners understand and trust your systems.
  • You are passionate about developing people. You invest time in one-on-ones, create stretch opportunities, provide candid feedback, and celebrate your team's wins. You understand that building great technology starts with building great teams.

Every system your team builds translates to customers saving money on products they need, selling partners growing their businesses more effectively, and Amazon becoming the obvious choice for everyday essentials. And every engineer you develop becomes a stronger leader who can multiply that impact.

Why This Matters

Everyday essentials-products customers need regularly and predictably-represent the fastest-growing segment of Amazon's business. By making promotions smarter, more targeted, and easier to manage, you are helping Amazon become the default choice for these repeat purchases. That's good for customers, good for selling partners, and good for Amazon's flywheel.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a two-pizza engineering team, creating career growth plans and coaching engineers to achieve their aspirations while building a sustainable, high-performing culture.
  • Own technical strategy and architecture for promotion platform capabilities supporting hundreds of millions of dollars in spend, making critical architectural decisions for complex systems including ML personalization, Real Time eligibility engines, and distributed pipelines.
  • Drive cross-functional impact by partnering with SPP, Promotions Platform, EE Sciences, SEAS, Selling Partner Services, and other teams to influence organizational goals and deliver customer and selling partner value.
  • Deliver business results by building new incentive types and experiences that create win-win outcomes, leveraging GenAI to enhance productivity and explainability, and enabling integration with surfaces like Rufus and Amelia.
  • Navigate ambiguity by defining team vision, roadmaps, and resourcing needs, balancing tactical execution with strategic innovation.
  • Foster inclusive excellence by creating an environment of respect and belonging where diverse perspectives thrive, while maintaining operational excellence and sustainable work/life harmony.
A Day in the Life

Some mornings start early, connecting with the global science team on ML model performance before your day begins. You coach engineers on career goals, review architecture with the Promotions Platform team on new incentive types, and partner with partner teams on optimization strategies. You present to executive leadership based on your subject matter expertise. You tackle technical challenges-from preventing promotion abuse to integrating with Rufus-while making build-vs-reuse decisions. Some days, you join calls with global partners to strategize on personalized targeting approaches. You leverage mechanisms like sprint planning, and monthly technical reviews to maintain operational excellence.
