TITLE: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Hopkinton Public Schools seeks a highly skilled, strategic, and collaborative financial leader to serve as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) beginning July 1, 2026. Hopkinton is a high-performing, growing suburban district with increasing enrollment, expanding special education and student support needs, and major capital projects underway. The Chief Financial Officer plays a central role in ensuring that financial systems, staffing models, and operational supports are aligned to student needs, district priorities, and long-term sustainability. The Chief Financial Officer reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools and serves as a key member of the district's senior leadership team. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for all financial and business operations of the Hopkinton Public Schools, including budget development, accounting, payroll, purchasing, grants, and long-range financial planning. The position works closely with the Superintendent, School Committee, Town Manager, municipal Chief Financial Officer, and other municipal partners to ensure sound fiscal management and transparent communication.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or a related field;
- Massachusetts DESE certification (or eligibility) as a School Business Administrator;
- Minimum of five years of successful financial management experience, preferably in a school or municipal setting;
- Demonstrated experience in budget development, financial reporting, and internal controls.
Preferred:
- Master's degree in business, finance, public administration, or a related field
- Experience in a growing or high-performing school district
- Knowledge of Massachusetts school finance, procurement law, and grant management
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Duties:
Financial Leadership and Budget Management
- Lead the development, management, and monitoring of the district's annual operating budget;
- Prepare multi-year financial projections aligned to enrollment, staffing, and programmatic needs;
- Manage district expenditures, revenues, grants, revolving funds, and special account;
- Provide regular financial reports and analysis to the Superintendent, School Committee, and town officials;
- Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local fiscal regulations;
- Other Duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
Business Office and Operations
- Supervise and support business office staff, including accounting, purchasing, and accounts payable;
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls and financial systems;
- Oversee purchasing in compliance with Massachusetts procurement laws;
- Serve as the District's procurement officer in coordination with Town officials;
- Other Duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
Strategic Planning and District Support
- Advise the Superintendent and School Committee on fiscal and operational implications of policy and program decisions;
- Support collective bargaining with financial analysis and projections;
- Work closely with district leaders in Student Services, Technology, and Human Resources to align resources to student needs;
- Develop cost-saving strategies and ensure efficient and effective use of district resources.
- Other Duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
Compliance and Reporting
- Oversee DESE End-of-Year reports, grant financial reports, audits, and state/federal filings;
- Coordinate external and internal audits;
- Ensure accurate reporting of financial, staffing, and program data;
- Other Duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools.
Terms of Employment
This is a full-time, exempt senior leadership position. Salary range: $155,000 - $165,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is provided in accordance with district and town policies. Employment is subject to the successful completion of all required background checks.
