Osborn Engineering Company is seeking Healthcare/Hospital Design Mechanical Engineering Professionals who have 10-20 years' experience in Healthcare Engineering Design (HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection) for our Energy Facility Group in Detroit, Michigan, Akron, Cleveland and/or Columbus, Ohio offices. This position reports directly to the Manager of Healthcare and will work closely with the Directors, Managers and Engineering staff to ensure client's needs and expectations are met/exceeded in a timely fashion. Successful candidates will be a part of and work with our senior staff to design complicated and various types of HVAC/Plumbing/Medical Gas systems utilized within healthcare occupancies and have an understanding of fire protection/alarm systems for all types of healthcare facilities and laboratories. It is also desired that candidates have strong specification writing experience

Additionally, the successful candidate must have a working knowledge and practical application of the following:

  • AIA Facilities Guideline Institute (FGI)
  • ASHRAE 170 - Ventilation of Healthcare Facilities
  • NFPA 70 (National Electric Code)
  • Environment of Care codes as applied by The Joint Commission
  • 99 (Healthcare Facilities Code)
  • 101 (Life Safety Code)

The successful candidate will work with facility engineering and/or construction planning and design, of each hospital organization and assist in developing the design and support for each of the engineering services we provide. Assist field staff, general contractors, mechanical and plumbing contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and design during construction.


  • BSME or BSAE (with mechanical specialty) degree from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • E.I. or PE registration (highly preferred but not required)
  • 4-10 years Healthcare design skills or related experience
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (An AutoCAD proficiency review will be conducted)
  • Knowledge of Revit
  • Knowledge of Technology systems utilized within Healthcare
  • Proven Project Management and supervision skills
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices and procedures
  • Must be able to follow and properly apply FGI guidelines, the practices and policies of the associated local and building codes, discipline, divisions and firm.
  • Review, understand, and apply local, state and federal codes and standards related to the design and construction of Healthcare facilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Create and evolve system designs from concept to final construction document phase
  • Develop detailed fee proposals, project narratives and construction cost estimates for existing and new client contacts
  • Manage permits, regulatory strategy development, field surveys and construction compliance
  • Responsible for budget tracking, cost control and report preparation
  • Quality assurance (QA/QC) review of technical work for staff assigned to your projects
  • Perform analyses and apply problem solving techniques in order to develop creative, innovative solutions
  • Performs a variety of complicated tasks and critical thinking
