About Krea
At Krea, we are building next-generation AI creative tools. We're dedicated to making AI intuitive and controllable for creatives - our mission is to build tools that empower human creativity, not replace it. We believe AI is a new medium that allows us to express ourselves through various formats - text, images, video, sound, and even 3D. We're building better, smarter, and more controllable tools to harness this medium.
We've raised over $83M and are backed by world-class Silicon Valley investors such as Andreesen Horowitz and Bain Capital. We work Full time and in-person at our waterfront office in San Francisco. We care about creativity: our team includes musicians, designers, visual artists, and engineers.
This role
We're looking for a Head of Legal to own Krea's legal strategy around open-source models, licensing, and long-term risk. The role is foundational. You'll design and manage the licensing frameworks that allow other to use Krea's model, advise on how we ship and distribute AI safely, and help protect the company from future litigation related to model training, data use, and outputs.
You'll work closely with product, research, and leadership to translate technical realities into clear legal structures - often in areas where precedent is limited or still evolving.
What you'll do
- Design, draft, and maintain licensing frameworks for Krea's open-source model, including commercial use by third parties.
- Advise leadership, product, and research teams on legal risk related to model training, datasets, outputs, and downstream usage.
- Anticipate and mitigate potential litigation and regulatory risk tied to generative AI.
- Stay deeply informed on the evolving legal landscape around AI, copyright, IP, data use, and open-source licensing.
- Support negotiations with partners and customers around model licensing, usage rights, and restrictions.
- Help shape internal policies and documentation related to model use, distribution, and governance.
What we're looking for
- J.D. with active bar membership in good standing.
- Experience in technology law covering IP, licensing, and product-related risk, ideally in AI or media.
- Familiarity with copyright and training-data issues relevant to generative models.
- Prior in-house experience at a technology or AI company, or close collaboration with product and engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of open-source or source-available licensing models.
- Interest in creative tools, open-source communities, and emerging technology ecosystems.
- High ownership and comfort operating in areas with limited legal precedent.
What we offer
- Openness to sponsoring international candidates (eg, STEM OPT, OPT, H-1B, O-1, E-3).
- Work alongside a world-class team building the future of AI creative tooling.
- Significant scope and company-wide impact.
- Competitive compensation (75th percentile of market) with meaningful equity.
